Benefitting Ophthalmology Resident & Fellow Education

Established in the spring of 2004 by the alumni of the University of Oklahoma Department of Ophthalmology, the Acers Society honors the department’s first full-time chair, Dr. Thomas E. Acers. The Society exists to support and further the highest quality of resident and fellow education.

By ensuring tomorrow’s ophthalmologists receive world-class training and supervised clinical experience, the Acers Society protects the future of the profession and the patients it serves—a commitment shared by every member.

Building Professional Connections

In addition to supporting the next generation of ophthalmology professionals, members have the opportunity to build lasting professional and mentoring relationships. Acers Society members, including both alumni and current residents or fellows, can share their knowledge, advice, and experiences during the annual Acers Reception and other events.

Supporting Initiatives

To encourage an appreciation of medical literature and scientific methods, the OU Department of Ophthalmology encourages residents to produce at least one original project per year through the residency research initiative.

These residents present their research at the annual Resident and Alumni meeting in June. Following a vote by the faculty, the resident with the winning presentation is awarded the Dr. and Mrs. T.E. Acers Resident Honor Award at the Acers Reception.

Membership in the Acers Society is open to graduates of the ophthalmology program at the University of Oklahoma, as well as interested supporters of the program.
